MP Peter MacKay Responds To Three Questions

Uncategorized Comments (0)

Thank you very much for your recent correspondence on behalf of the Canadian Democratic Movement.  I appreciate your having taken the time to write to me and share your thoughts on the current state of the political landscape in Canada.  Thank you for bringing your campaign and your website to my attention.

Given the nature of your questions, I want to bring to your attention the democratic reform package adopted by the PC Party at our National General Meeting in Edmonton.  This innovative set of proposals reflects a careful and creative partnership between Parliament and all Canadians that gives each of us the opportunity to have a direct influence on public policy.

As a Member of Parliament, I have seen first hand the steady erosion of confidence in the institutions designed to promote and protect the public interest.  Our society has undergone some fundamental changes over the past number of years, but our political institutions have not kept pace with that change.  The PC Party has passed the most comprehensive package of reforms designed to re-empower Parliament and its Members and reconnect government with the citizens they are there to serve.  I personally favour a number of institutional and electoral changes aimed at reinvigorating democracy and energizing more Canadians to take part in the important political debates of the day.

If you have not already done so, I welcome you to read the report on our website www.pcparty.ca.  I believe that Canadians will find much to support in these policies to improve government accountability. I look forward to discussing such issues with Canadians.

Regarding first question, unfortunately, I am unaware of the incident you mention.  Obviously, cooperation along the border is necessary on a variety of issues, especially in the post-September 11th environment.

The PC of Canada recognizes the importance of electoral reform and we are open to examining a number of possible changes, including proportional representation.  However, we also recognize that many people are happy with the status quo and would not welcome such a change.  We also believe there must be full and open debate about any contemplated changes, which should be made with the goal of gaining a greater representation under the system and fully expressing the will of the people.

The process of globalization is ongoing, filled with challenges and opportunities.  Although there are legitimate concerns to be addressed, the benefits that freer trade has brought to many countries, including Canada are unquestionable.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views with me.

Sincerely,

Peter MacKay
