Support our troops – bring them home

There is certainly no issue more important to Canada’s future than the current war and occupation of muslim lands. The increasing number of dead Canadian soldiers being sent home for burial is causing people to wake up and form an opinion one way or the other. I personally side with those who believe the best thing we can do to support our troops is to bring them home immediately.
This war has been escalating and intensifying since October of 2001, and there is no sign that the Afghan people are willing to surrender and stop their resistance to the occupation forces. If a foreign military power attacked and invaded Canada it would be my patriotic duty to kill as many of the invaders as possible using roadside bombs, ambushes, and every other opportunity to kill that presented itself. We should expect no less from the Afghan citizens whose country and people we are currently destroying wth our military forces. Any Afghani who has lost family and friends to Canadian bombs or bullets has a legitimate beef. God help us all when our foreign agression comes home to roost. What goes around comes around. I feel fortunate to live in a small town that is unlikely to be targetted by a suicide bomber who watched while his home and family were destroyed as ‘collateral damage’.
Britain and Spain have seen what happens when their military offensive against the muslims comes full circle. What we call terrorism is simply muslims fighting back against western invaders using the only methods available to them. Our leaders call the muslims cowards but in reality they are brave people who are willing to die for what they believe in.
The whole notion that our Canadian forces can ‘win the hearts and minds’ of the Afghani population is foolish in the first place. In practical terms ‘winning the hearts and minds’ means the people will come to love and respect us. Even here in Canada a large segment of our population hates or disrespects our government, so to think we can do better in a foreign country by bombing it is an exercise in stupidity. The Harper government has vowed to “finish the job” by sending more soldiers and tanks. Sadly, the only thing Harper is finishing off is Canada’s reputation as a neutral peace-broker on the world stage. If he really wants to win hearts and minds he should start dropping blankets and food instead of bombs.
I do not believe there are any Canadian heroes in the Afghanistan conflict because the conflict is one-sided and immoral. One side has all the jets, all the helicopters, all the tanks and other modern weapons. The Afghani resistance has only rusty light weapons and courageous people willing to strap bombs to themselves and walk or drive into the Canadian and American invaders.
Another moral atrocity is the Canadian practice of capturing anyone they label as ‘Taleban’ and then turning them over to the Americans to be tortured in concentration camps such as Abu-Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay. This makes the Harper government just as guilty as the American war criminals who administer the well documented torture with the blessings of Mr. Bush.
Over 500 Canadians died for a stalemate in the Korean War. Over 100 more died when they participated in the unsuccessful Vietnam invasion. We already have almost 40 dead in Afghanistan. Let’s honour our troops by bringing them home right away. If I remember correctly Mr. Bush said he is willing to “go it alone.”
Sincerely,
Norm Smith
