There is no Longer a Defence for Missile Defence

“Told you so”.
Those against national missile defence have been saying that to defenders of the nmd since the beginning. Canadians in general have been saying that since the beginning. What is that we said?
Those of us against the notion of a national missile shield as developed by the United States have been saying it will lead to an arms race once again and the eventual weaponization of space. And sure enough out comes word that both are coming true already at this early stage.
First the United States Air Force has released details of their plans to turn outer space into a battlefield. This plan goes far beyond merely shooting down rogue missiles as those supporters in Canada say is so essential as to why we must take part. This new release shows offensive capability as well as defensive capability to the system. Some American officials have already spoken up and are warning this will lead to an out and out arms race like the cold war.
Well they didn’t have to wait very long for confirmation. The Russians have released details of their new systems to defeat the new American nmd systems. Here we go again. Just when the world had turned away from all out destruction and Armageddon we have the Bush government abrogating long standing treaties and forcing others to re-arm themselves with the most destructive weapons ever known.
The Canadian government needs to stand back, take a deep breath and once again tell George Bush to shove his warmongering. There is no place in a civilized world for actions like these. We should be making advances in removing wmd from nations, not encouraging a ramping up of efforts to get new and improved versions there of!
Its pretty much a forgone conclusion that the Conservative Party of Canada will back ANY and ALL moves the US makes in this regard. (see Iraq war) Swallowing hard – it is up to the federal Liberal party to once again step up to the face off circle for all Canadians and the world in general and say NO. We will not take part in a new arms race. We will not put weapons in space. We are looked upon by much of the world as a peaceful nation and as a nation that holds some sway with the elephant to our south.
Let us not disappoint, let us stay proud and say no. Bush is vindictive and will say this and that as veiled threats to Canada for voicing our sovereign opinion on the matter. So what, we have far too much to lose and everything to gain.
The Canadian Democratic Movement urges its readers and members to lobby their government officials and tell them just what you think of Canada entering into this pact with the nuclear devils.
