The long running battles before the WTO between Canada and the United States may take a new turn.
After repeated wins before the WTO, Canada is now stepping up the attack. “Retaliation is not the preferred course of action, but this is about respecting international trade laws,” said Trade Minister Jim Peterson.
On August 31, 2004, the WTO ruled that Canada, Brazil, Chile, the European Union, India, Japan, Mexico and South Korea could retaliate by up to 72 percent of the annual anti-dumping and countervailing duties on exports from these countries disbursed to U.S. companies in a given year. To show that we are serious and ready to play hardball, Canada submitted to the WTO the final retaliation authorization request.
